J. Trudeau is expected to resign

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will likely announce his resignation this week amid growing divisions within his Liberal Party, the Globe and Mail reported on Sunday.

Citing three anonymous sources with knowledge of the party's internal affairs, the Globe said Trudeau could make the announcement as early as Monday.

However, according to the Globe's sources, it is likely that such an announcement will be made on the Wednesday before the Liberal Party's national convention.

The Globe reported that it is unclear whether Trudeau will serve as interim leader while the party searches for a new leader.

Trudeau has not been so popular

Trudeau's popularity has plummeted recently, with his government barely surviving several no-confidence votes and critics calling for his resignation.

He has vowed to stay on as leader of the Liberals until the October 2025 elections but has faced even more pressure from incoming US President Donald Trump, who has threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian goods.

Canada faces more changes

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned in December after disagreeing with Trudeau on responding to a possible D. This was the first open disagreement with the Prime Minister in his cabinet.

Later that month, Trudeau announced a major cabinet reshuffle, replacing a third of his team to contain the political turmoil.

In November, he traveled to Florida to meet Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate to prevent a trade war.

However, Trump then went on to hit Trudeau with more derogatory blows on social media, repeatedly calling him the 'Governor of Canada' and stating that making the United States' northern neighbor the 51st state of the United States would be a 'great idea.'
